Robert Jordan & The Wheel of Time

Published by slcolman at 12:15 pm under Life in General Edit This

I went looking today to see if there was any information as to when the final and 12th book to be titled A Memory of Light of The Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan was going to be coming out.  As you might remember I am looking for something to catch my fancy book wise right now and just not having much luck!  Much to my shock instead of finding a release date of when Robert Jordan’s next work would be out I found that Brandon Sanderson would be completing the work instead!

Yes, I knew that Robert Jordan was very ill fighting a battle with a rare blood disease called amyloidosis, but somehow I missed that he had passed on September 16, 2007.  What 2007!?!  Where have I and all my other fantasy loving reading buddies been as none of us had heard this news! My DH and I were just talking about when the final book would be out and how we hoped that Robert Jordan would be able to finish it about 3 weeks ago when we scored a hard back copy of book 10 Crossroads of Twilight at the local dollar store.  At least since Harriet Popham Rigney, Jordan’s wife and editor of all The Wheel of Time series to date will be working along with Brandon Sanderson the book should be able to wrap up all the loose ends and remain true to Robert Jordan’s style.

I also found out that instead of being just one book that it looks like  A Memory of Light will be initially published as three separate novels.

  1. A Memory of Light, Part 1: The Gathering Storm will be published on Tuesday, November 3, 2009.
  2. A Memory of Light, Part 2: Shifting Winds (Working title)
  3. A Memory of Light, Part 3: Tarmon’Gaidon (Working title)

Great so we are going to drag this out even further!!  If  you have read or followed The Wheel of TimeThe Eye of the World.  Which means that it will probably span well over two decades before the epic series is completed. series you know that it began way back in 1990 with Book One -

However Brandon Sanderson said the following about completing the book, “I’ll be honest, this is a big, big project. I stand by one promise to you, no matter what else happens. I will NOT artificially inflate the size of this book. It doesn’t matter to me how many volumes Tor decides to make it; the story is the same to me. One volume, as Robert Jordan planned it. Enormous.”

In other news there are plans to adapt The Wheel of Time series for possibly the big screen as Universal Pictures has acquired the film rights.  It looks like the movies will be produced by Red Eagle Entertainment.

That is sad news for you, but it least you have some good reading material to look forward to. I hope the new author does not disappoint you.

I wonder why the author decided to make so many novels. I agree that it will be something to look forward too. :)

I hate it when they tease you with stuff like that. It’s like they take some kind of perverse joy in torturing their loyal fans. It’s downright mean.

Yeah, I found out last October that Mr Jordan had been dead a year. I felt *so* out of touch!

I hadn’t heard of Brandon Sanderson until then: picked up Book 1 of Mistborn and enjoyed it, so will consume at least that series while waiting for “Book 12″ to come out.

Splitting it up into three is news to me, but in a way it isn’t surprising… the story got out of control, with so many different threads and hints that I know there are a lot of ends, loose and otherwise, to tie up! I like the sideways acknowledgment that Mr Jordan/the publisher had artificially inflated book size in the past - I truly feel that some books in the middle of the Wheel of Time series could have been condensed into one tome with no loss to story.

… I thought I’d heard of plans to make WoT into a tv series? Oh wait, that was George R R Martin’s Song of Ice and Fire series :p Any plans for adapting fantasy to the big or small screen fills me with dread now… LoTR was great, but have you caught “The Legend of the Seeker” tv adaptation of Terry Goodkind’s Sword of Truth series? I sat through 2 episodes, then swore never again :p

    Cheers!
